Study Shows Unexpected Sources of Inventory Movement and Waste Reduce Overall Productivity in Manufacturing Facilities

PHILADELPHIA CREAM, October 5, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Improving productivity is critical to keeping a manufacturing plant running at peak performance, and impediments to operational productivity can often stem from unexpected – or unrecognized – obstacles. Finding hidden waste to continuously improve can be a challenge for manufacturers. However, a study by Tork, an Essity brand, reveals that a surprisingly large number of machine operators are interrupted at least 20 times during their working day by having to retrieve or dispose of wiping products. and cleaning. Additionally, the study reveals that operators often take more wipers than necessary to avoid these interruptions. To help businesses combat waste, Tork has created the free Tork Motion Waste Calculator that allows businesses to measure the impact of inefficient wiper placement.

Reducing waste in order to increase productivity is a fundamental principle of Lean Manufacturing. Movement reductions and inventory junk can come from unexpected places. As mentioned above, Tork conducted a study on this topic as part of its work to better understand these unknown sources of inventory movement and waste. The results show that when wipers are not conveniently placed, it can generate both movement and inventory waste, as well as cause worker stress.

The study shows that:

  • 44% of machine operators are interrupted at least 20 times during a working day to fetch or throw away windshield wipers.
  • 74% of machine operators take more wipers than needed for the task to avoid having to walk and fetch more each time.
  • 69% of machine operators declare be stressed if interrupted in their work when they have a lot to do.
  • 90% of machine operators say that if they had professional industrial wipes near methis would contribute to their workplace organization and job satisfaction.

Tork Performance® Dispensing System – designed to fit any job
The solution to this productivity problem is to place wipers at the workstation so that machine operators do not have to stop to get them. But because manufacturing environments vary, it can be difficult to find a solution that works for every business. That is why Torque Performance® The valves have been designed with a range of unique and flexible mounting options, allowing them to be placed where they are needed most – within easy reach of the machine operator. This design feature effectively eliminates the root cause of wasted movement and inventory shown by the study.

With our understanding of the manufacturing environment, we are able to not only help companies identify new sources of waste, but also provide them with a solution to the problem. Our innovative products can help businesses continuously improve by reducing inventory movement and waste,” says Suzanne ServeissRegional Marketing Manager – Industry Segment.
