These two WhatsApp scams can steal your personal information, bank details

Cybercriminals are now exploiting the ability to send functional external links on WhatsApp to trick victims into giving out their personal and even bank details. A new WhatsApp scam named “Rediroff.com” or “Rediroff.ru” has been revealed and deceives the victims by sending a link on the platform owned by Meta.

According to a CNBC report, crooks send a link to WhatsApp users, claiming that users can earn a reward by completing a simple survey. Once a user has answered the questions, they are taken to a website where they are asked to fill in sensitive information such as name, age, address, banking information, and other personal data.

The website collects sensitive information about users such as their IP address, device name and other personal information such as name, age, address, etc. This information can be misused to carry out fraudulent transactions or other illegal activities.

Another currently active scam on WhatsApp involves victims receiving messages from cybercriminals saying “sorry I didn’t recognize you” or “may I know who it is”. The scammer strikes up a conversation with them and even offers compliments to make the users feel better and gain their trust, after which the scammer manipulates them into revealing their personal details. These details can then be used by bad actors in a number of ways.

If you’ve received similar text messages recently, here are some tips to help you avoid getting scammed on WhatsApp.

# Ignorance is happiness. Literally! If you cannot verify the source of the received message, avoid clicking on the link, however tempting it may be. Block or report the number from which you received the message.

# Installing a mobile security solution (antivirus for smartphones) can also be a good investment since it saves you from threats even when you install third-party software, surf the internet, or download a file.

# Some of these posts even use bad grammar, incorrect sentence formation which is clearly a red flag. However, this will not always be the case as the crooks can disguise themselves as employees of large companies.

Finally, report and block. Remember that it is better to report and block these numbers instead of clicking on the link, even out of curiosity.
